PEAK PROFILE

LIZ “SNORKEL” THOMAS

WHAT IS YOUR GO-TO PERFORMANCE/ENERGY FOOD AND WHY?

If it’s for a shorter hike (when I can afford to carry heavier fresh foods), I love avocado maki rolls with shiso furikake. My mom is from Japan so this is comfort food for me. The nori makes the meal easy finger food; avocado adds some fat and calories. Plus, the salt from the furikake replenishes salt I lose through sweat.

BIGGEST CHALLENGE TO GETTING GOOD NUTRITION? ANY EASY SOLUTIONS?

Getting tired of eating the same things. I’m always looking for new items that are available and asking friends and other athletes what they eat, to get new ideas.

WHAT IS YOUR BEST EATING HABIT? YOUR WORST?

Best: sneaking dehydrated or freeze-dried veggies into meals when I’m backpacking. Worst: going overboard on eating food when I get into town after many days in the backcountry.

HAS YOUR APPROACH TO FOOD, IN RELATION TO PERFORMANCE, CHANGED OVER TIME?

Yes, like many backpackers, I used to go heavy on candy and junk food. The more I backpack, the less sugar I add into my diet.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE FOOD INDULGENCE AT THE END OF THE DAY?

At the end of day, I’m usually so tired that I think of sleep as its own reward. I do like having some cheese or extra oil with my meal at night, though. Sometimes, I’ll do some hot tea or cocoa.

LIGHTNING ROUND: DOGS OR CATS? VAN, SUV, OR TRUCK? DOWN OR FLEECE?

Both. Subaru (does that count?). Down.
